Hypercat software/disk cataloger.
By Ian Wu. (C) Feb 1988.
The cataloger can be run from Workbench or from the CLI. It will open
a 2 colour screen using your Workbench's foreground/background colours.
Use the menus or keyboard shortcuts to select functions. Both PAL and
NTSC machines are supported (Pal owners get about 5 extra lines of info).
The cataloger's format consists of three fields:
1 - The program's name (max 30 chars)
2 - The program's type eg. Educational (max 20 chars)
3 - The disk number (0 - 9999)
A maximum of 5000 programs is allowed. (This may be increased if
a suitable donation accompanies the request, HINT, HINT).
On the title bar of the screen, you will see the current number of
records in the catalog, and also the current record range being displayed.
Project Menu
Open - Just type in the name of the catalog you want to load. Or
click on the close window gadget to cancel.
Save - Save the catalog under a name. Or click on close window
to cancel.
New - Clear the catalog. You'll get a requester asking you
to confirm.
Quit - Quits the program what else?
Sort Menu
Name - Sorts the catalog in alphabetical order under program name.
Type - As above for the type field.
Disk Number - Ditto for disk numbers.
Find Menu
Name - Finds a particular program name or group of names. This is case
sensitive. Type in a name (or close to cancel). If it exists, it
will be displayed on the top line in highlight. Alternatively,
you may give a wild card specification as follows:
* - matches any number of characters
? - matches a single character
Eg. a*b - find programs starting with lower case 'a' and ending
with lower case 'b'
co? - find program names starting with 'co' with one
character after it (co1, cod co3, coo etc)
In this case, no name will be highlighted, but all matches if
any will be moved to the top of the screen (and the top of
the catalog, so you may have to re-sort the catalog).
Type - As above for program type.
Disk Number - As above for a range of disk numbers. You'll be asked
to enter the lowest and largest range of disk numbers to
search for (or click on close to cancel).
Eg. from 12 to 33 - search for programs with disk numbers
between 12 and 33 inclusive.
Delete Menu
Name - }
Type - } As above but delete any matches.
Disk Number - }
Insert Menu
Record - Click on cancel to cancel. Otherwise enter the program name,
type and disk number and click on ok. The program will be
inserted at the end of the catalog. If the displayed range
(see title bar) is not at the end, you won't see the
new record.
Disk - You will be asked to give the disk number and the
volume/drive name you want to read, or click on close to
cancel. The entire contents of the disk and all
directories/subdirectories will be read and program files
will be inserted into the catalog. The type field for each
of these programs will default to 'Command'. You can change
this later by editing the record(s).
Exclude .info files - You can toggle this selection on and off. If
you select this (menu will have a tick next to it), all
files ending in '.info' will be ignored and not inserted.
This is the default mode.
Display Menu
Forward - Moves you forward a page at a time through the catalog.
A page is the maximum number of lines that can fit on the
screen (about 23 for PAL machines, 18 for NTSC).
Backward - Takes you backwards a page at a time.
Top - Goes to the top of the catalog.
Bottom - Goes to the bottom of the catalog.
Print Menu
Name - Enter the range of records to print (defaults to all records),
or click close to cancel. For example from 2 to 6 prints just
records 2 to 6. Only the program name will be printed in two
columns across the page. Printer must have line length of at
least 65 characters. You can press Ctrl C (Control C) to
stop the printing.
Name/Disk Number - As above, but two columns of program name and disk
number.
Name/Type/Disk Number - As above but a single record per line with all
three fields.
Editing
To edit a particular record, just double click on a record. If the
record is already highlighted, then just click once on it. You may edit
the record or cancel. Any record you click on will stay highlighted until
the next find/edit or sort operation. You may also delete a file by
clicking once on a record and then selecting delete name on the menu. To
unselect a record which is highlighted, move the mouse pointer down
either below the last record (if the page isn't full), or as far down
the screen as it will go and click once.
Whenever you perform any edit/insert or a find operation with wild
cards, the catalog may not be in sort order anymore. What you see on
the display is the order they are stored on the catalog. So you may
want/need to choose sort again before saving the file.
Disk.cat is provided as an example catalog.
